# How to install LVis in GMP mode
_LVis_ saves all files in a single folder called “LVis database folder”. All files required to operate _LVis_ and to analyse acquisitions like calibrations, nuclide libraries, background corrections etc. as well as the complete _LVis_ configuration (like the name and address of detector hardware, available counting routines etc) are saved in respective subfolders of this “LVis database folder”. This “LVis database folder” is defined in the installation. In case of a pc hardware failure, it is possible to restore a complete _LVis_ system simply by copying a backup of this folder to a new pc (given that the respective paths and locations are identical). Multiple computers can access the same database folder. To do so, the folder must be stored on a network drive. Each computer must mount this location using the same name. This greatly simplifies the operation since because all systems can access the same set of libraries, write to the Log and search the _LabJournal_.
We strongly recommend that a regular backup is created of the complete _LVis_ database folder.
Besides the “LVis database directory” only one additional folder is needed to operate _LVis_. This is “_C:\\User\\temp_”, a folder that is automatically created when installing _GammaVision_ & _LVis_. (If you are using _LVis_ without _GammaVision_ e.g., when only using ROI analysis, this folder is not required).
## Windows Accounts needed to operate LVis in GMP mode
There are two Windows user accounts required to operate LVis under GMP conditions:
1. One Windows User account for which LVis is installed. This user should belong the users group “Administrators” and it will be used to administrate the basic configuration of LVis. Ideally, only an IT administrator should be able to use this account since it has full control over all files. In the following this Windows user account is called _alvis_. 2. One Windows User account that is used by all laboratory staff working with LVis. Regardless of what their individual rights in LVis are. This Windows User account has only very limited rights and must not be able to read or write files into the “LVis database folder”. In the following, this Windows user account is called _ulvis_. Note that _ulvis_ requires full access to the subfolder “_~LVisDatabasefolder\\Config\\Uli_” (see following). Ideally, _ulvis_ is logged in automatically after booting the pc.
## Background information
When working under GMP regulations, the users of LVis must not be able to delete any files created by LVis nor must they be allowed to change any results or settings without tracking and logging these changes. LVis is not capable of running in multiple instances parallel on different Windows User accounts. Therefore, only one Windows User account can be used for all people working with LVis in a GMP network! This is _ulvis_!
LVis itself has a user management program called _Uli_. _Uli_ is used to define LVis users and give them individual rights. By default, _Uli_ auto starts with Windows. _Uli_ runs as a background process and is listed with its blue key icon in the system tray of Windows (see screenshot).

Double clicking this icon will open _Uli_.
Important information:
_Uli_ will automatically be started on the Windows account that logs in first after booting Windows. In general, this is not an issue, however when working under GMP regulations _Uli_ must not be executed under the Windows account _alvis_.
Screenshot of _Uli_:
with full rights and the _LVis_ User (PWD: “lvis”) with very limited rights in _LVis_.
It is possible to have the Windows domain controller in a network handle the passwords of LVis users. This allows the identification of LVis users through the windows domain. This way, the respective password rules like password complexity, renewal of passwords and so on are identical to the ones of the Windows domain.
The following screenshot gives an example of an _LVis_ user “Marc Breidenbach” who is linked to the windows domain “AMETEK-AD” and the windows account “mbreidenbach”.
account, this account’s _Uli_ password is “?”.
When adding a new user or modifying an existing user in _Uli_, it is necessary to save the new information before closing _Uli_.
must have full read & write access to this folder.
## Installing LVis for GMP mode
This is a step-by-step guideline to install and configure LVis in GMP mode.
1. Log in as _alvis_ and install _Connections_ and _GammaVision_. Register _GammaVision_ and make sure that it starts without the registration notification. 2. Create the LVis Database folder (e.g., “_C:\\LVis”_).
Note: We recommend using a location for the LVis database folder that is regularly backed up.
When using a shared network location (e.g., “_\\\\servername\\folder”_), mount it as a network drive (e.g., “_L:\\”_). When using multiple pc’s with LVis installations, use the same ~LVis Databasefolder and the same mount on all computers.
When using multiple _LVis_ systems that should use a local folder (e.g., “_C:\\LVis_” on pc1) as a shared “LVis database folder”, don’t forget to share this folder in the network. Make sure only the _alvis_ user account and members of the Administrators group have read & write access for this folder. Ideally, no other users should have access.
Setup:
Right click on the LVis database folder and select “Properties” then proceed to the “Security” tab.
Click “Advanced” to disable the inheritance of access rights and convert the permissions to explicit permissions (see screenshots below).
Then remove “Users” and “Authenticated Users” – see below – and explicitly add the _alvis_ user account. Assign full access rights for this account. 1. In case you are using _EFFTRAN_ and _MEFFTRAN_ copy/extract these to the respective subfolder of the “_~LVisDatabasefolder\\_” 2. Install _LVis_ and select the _LVis_ database folder created in step 2 during the setup. 3. Reboot the computer and log in as _alvis_. Browse to the “_~LVisDatabasefolder\\Config\\Uli_”and right-click on it. Under “Properties” → “Security”, add _ulvis_ and give it full access to this folder. 4. Create a new folder called “_~LVisDatabasefolder\\Shared_” and give _ulvis_ as well full access to this folder. 5. Start _LVis_. Log in as _LVis admin_ using “admin” as the password. When you are asked for a configuration file, click “Cancel”. Then register _LVis_. In the “Settings”, verify that “Protected Mode” is ticked and that the directories are pointing to the respective folders in your “_~LVisDatabasefolder\\”._ If appropriate, go to the _LVis_ “Settings” and define the locations for _EFFTRAN_ & _MEFFTRAN_. Make sure that the “Time for auto log out” is not zero! Close the _LVis_ Settings. 6. Double click the _Uli_ icon in the task bar and add a user called _ORTEC Service_ and give it full access rights! Save _Uli_. Then go back to _LVis_ Settings, browse to “Names” and import the three Users from _Uli_. Then close _LVis_. 7. Browse to “_C:\\Program Files (x86)\\LVis_”, search for a program called “Ella.exe” and create a shortcut to that program on the desktop. Name this shortcut “Ella config – PWD change”. Open the “Settings” for that shortcut and modify the target to: “”_C:\\Program Files (x86)\\LVis\\Ella.exe_“ ”-reg: lvis.exe“” (see screenshot below).
Click “Advanced” and tick the box “Run as administrator”
Then click “OK” and again “OK” to leave the shortcut editor. 1. Double click the “Ella config –PWD change” shortcut and enter the information for _alvis_ into the fields. The “Group of the user account” should be “Administrators”.
You may have to specify the domain with the “User account name” like “_domain\\alvis_” or the name of the pc in case _alvis_ is a local account (“_pcname\\alvis_”). Note that the “Group of the user account” might be different depending on what user group the IT department has assigned _alvis_ to.
Here is an example for a German local user account _alvis_ called “gamma-admin” on the pc named P34029. “gamma-admin” belongs to the group “Administratoren”:

Click “OK” to close the dialog.
Note: This shortcut will have to be executed every time the password for _alvis_ changes!
1. Create another shortcut to “Ella.exe” on the desktop and name it “LVis GMP launcher”. Move it into “_~LVisDatabasefolder\\Shared_”. 2. Reboot the pc. Log in as _ulvis_. Verify that you don’t have access to the _LVis_ database directory via Windows Explorer. Browse to the “_~LVisDatabasefolder\\Shared_” directory (enter it in the address field of Windows Explorer) and move the “LVis GMP launcher” shortcut to the desktop of _ulvis_. If you want, you can right click on it and choose “Pin to taskbar”. Double click on it, verify that _LVis_ starts and that you can log in with the “ORTEC Service” account created in step 8. 3. Click “File”, and open and verify that _LVis_ is running in protected mode. This means, that the file open dialogue window is not a Windows Explorer window but a native _LVis_ dialogue. Open an existing LVM file under “_~LVisDatabasefolder\\Measurements\\Buffer_” (e.g., “_Soil_2006.lvm_” in case you are using _MEFFTRAN_) change the sample weight by a small fraction and re-analyse. The file should be properly analysed. Click “Save” and verify that a “Save As” dialogue pops up. 4. Add another user to _Uli_, when finished click “Save” and verify that there is no error message.
